Individual Support

Individual grief support is available to family members and caregivers of Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care patients, as well as people who have had a family member served by a hospice outside Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care’s service area.

Family members and caregivers of Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care patients who desire support will receive a phone call from a grief support specialist. If you would like, a staff member will visit you to explain our program and to talk with you about your grief experience. Together, the two of you will decide which of our services may be helpful to you. You may choose to participate in any, all or none of our services.

Our grief support specialists have degrees in social work, counseling or related areas. They have specialized training and experience in working with people who are grieving the death of a loved one. There is no charge for services. Grief support specialists can:
  • provide you with individual sessions to help you through the grief process.
  • connect you with additional resources and mental health professionals in the community if needed and desired.
In addition to individual sessions, grief support groups and memorial events are available. You also may choose to receive information by mail for the next year. Information such as grief support group schedules, ways to cope with the holidays and invitations to memorial events is included.

Staff and trained volunteers, sensitive to the needs of those who are grieving, provide emotional and social support through telephone calls. Volunteers also can provide occasional transportation to grief support events.
